Frequently Asked Questions:

Will the MCP-601 output a 100% full screen DVI /VGA display?
q
The MCP-601 will convert the entire DVI / VGA display to the legal unblanked 625/50 (PAL) or
525/60 (NTSC) video area. For instance, if the DVI / VGA resolution is 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768, the
MCP-601 will convert this area to the unblanked 625/50 video area.
There is also an underscan mode which will reduce the full screen DVI / VGA to fit inside the 625/50
'Safe action' area. This mode allows graphics that are often at the edge of DVI / VGA displays, such
as tool bars, to be displayed on lower cost picture monitors or television sets which typically overscan
the video signal.
The MCP-601 also has a MagniPort feature which is similar to Pan and Zoom that allows the user to
define the area of the DVI / VGA display to be converted to video. The best resolution can be achieved
through pixel-to-pixel encoding, that is by converting a 720 X 576 DVI / VGA display window to
video in 625/50 PAL and a 720X480 display window to video in 525/60 NTSC. Refer to " Pan, Zoom,
Underscan, VGA 1 to 1 and Mix modes" under the section on Basic Operations.
Setting up the MCP-601 with the 720X480 or 720X576 VGA resolutions
q
Refer to Setting up VGA Zoom One-to-One mode operation in "Section 4. Installation" to set up a
720x480 VGA screen for NTSC or 720x576 VGA screen for PAL application.
We have been making some measurements with the ATI cards and come up with the following:
Standard 640x480 uses a total horizontal pixel count of 800 (visible, blanking, sync) and 525 lines
(visible, blanking, sync). So 720 x 480 simply takes 80 more pixels from the blanking area and makes
them visible. The net result of this is that 720x480 and 640x480 have the same horizontal and vertical
sync frequencies and scan converters will report back 640x480 when receiving a 720x480 signal.
Resizing and positioning of incoming video and VGA
q
Resizing and positioning of incoming video.
Refer to "Adjusting the video squeeze size—Magni Premier Size Tab" in the Basic Operations section.
Go to Size tab; press Reset Video to begin. To change the video width, use the mouse arrow to grab
(press left click on the mouse) the horizontal edge of the rectangle on the Video Squeeze window and
size it. Similarly for the height, grab the vertical edge to the desire size. This is the new video input size
at the video output.
To position the squeeze video in the output, place the mouse arrow pointer within the selected rectangle
(video size), together with the right click on the mouse, then drag the whole area to the desire
