Connecting the MCP-601

The MCP-601 comes with an installation CD-ROM and the required cables that let you connect it to a
computer. The installation CD-ROM lets you load all the necessary initialization files and the Magni Premier
.
application software
NOTE:
The installation CD-ROM contains related information about the MCP-601. This information can
help you get a better understanding of what the MCP-601 is and how you can use it to best fit your needs.
Prior to loading any initialization files or the Magni Premier application software, we recommend that you
look this information over.
The MagniCoder Premier (MCP-601) is factory set for PowerUp memory location for Scan
Conversion with Video Input set to None (no input) and VGA analog graphics input. The unit
will perform an automatic setup for its VGA input to match the computers VGA card. (The VGA
Desktop color may need to be set to blue for Autoset to function correctly on some VGA cards.)
After initial start up, Setup can be changed, including the PowerUp, via the IR remote and/or the
supplied Magni Premier application software.
There are two installation procedures. One consists of operation with the IR remote controller and
one based on the MCP-601 being connected to the computer through RS232/USB and control by
the supplied Magni Premier application software. Refer to the section on Magni Premier
application software and IR remote operation for operational features and saving memories.

Hardware Installation

Hardware Installation with Remote IR Controller only

While the MCP-601 and the PC are both power down:
Install the supplied batteries (4xAAA) in the IR Remote Controller.
The PC supplies the graphics input to the MCP-601. Connect the provided 15-pin VGA cable to
the VGA video output port on the PC. The other end is connected to the MCP-601 VGA Input.
For best signal quality, make sure you use the supplied analog VGA connecting cable.
Connect VGA monitor to the MCP-601 VGA Monitor Out connector. The computer, on power
up, will recognize this monitor and the VGA drivers will set appropriately.
Optional: Connect the supplied DVI-D cable between the computer output to MCP-601 DVI
input. This will also allow the computer to set the DVI interface for best graphics results when
MCP-601 graphics is switched to DVI input. When using the DVI input, it is advisable to monitor
the PC generated graphics with a VGA monitor.
For PAL application, if you have a dual standard (NTSC/PAL) picture monitor, you can skip to
the next bullet point. Otherwise, connect a PAL composite video source (a video generator or a
VTR) to the Video Input with a BNC cable. This input signal will serve as the overlay video and
the genlock source. This step is very important during installation, as the unit will automatically
genlock the video output to the input video before the user can change the default standard and
default memories with the IR controller. An alternate method of setting the default standard is
through the Magni Premier application software.
This step is optional for NTSC applications as the defaults standard set from the factory is
Composite NTSC as input and for all memories. For changing to PAL standard, please read on.
Connect the MCP-601 Video Output with a BNC cable to a Video Monitor or VTR.
Connect the FX-1 MagniCoder Pro Controller to the FX-1 Panel Remote connector using the
supplied 8-pin phone wire.
Power on the PC and the MCP-601 unit.
