MCP-601 Operator's Manual

Setting Up VGA / Video pixel-to-pixel encoding mode

The MCP-601 internally processes video and graphics signals in the CCIR 601 signal domain, where
the native resolutions are dictated by the television H and V resolutions; 720x480 for NTSC/525
system and 720x576 for PAL/625 system.
Therefore, the best and almost perfect scan conversion and keying result can be achieved by
operating the computer display resolution at the above native resolutions for a full screen video
(television format) output. The same result can be achieved on all other display resolutions, where a
portion (MagniPort) of the graphics is being converted. For 640x480 graphics, it will only occupy a
portion of the video screen. For all 800x600 and above display resolutions; a section of the graphics
display screen (MagniPort) within the full screen can be selected to be equal to the video native
resolution (720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 for PAL). This selected MagniPort screen size, when
performing a direct one to one encoding (instead of scan converting), will equal to a full screen (or
underscan size) video output. The VGA Zoom 1 to 1 mode, once selected, will automatically size the
graphics port to 720x480 or 720x576 depends on the television standard being genlock to.

Pixel to pixel (Graphics to video) conversion mode -- VGA Zoom 1 to 1

On the Mix tab of the Magni Premier application software, the VGA Zoom 1 to 1 button enables a
VGA (or DVI input) window of 720x480 in NTSC, and 720x576 for PAL, to be encoded to
television video output. It provides:
Exact graphics pixel to video pixel encoding
Removes any pixel interpolation artifacts.
Improves key sharpness and reduces horizontal keyed color halo.
Improves key sharpness and reduces vertical keyed color halo.

Configuration for ONE-TO-ONE graphics to video encoding

One-to-One by definition is a VGA window of 720x480 in NTSC and 720x576 for PAL.
If the VGA resolution is 800x600, then the One-to-One window is a zoom area (or MagniPort) of 720x480 (or
720x576) on the 800x600 screen. There are four common cases of One-to-One graphics to video encoding. The
following examples are based on the 720x480 mode.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Case # 1:
In 640x480 VGA resolution, the commands that need to be sent to the MCP are as follows:
POS:COMPUTERIN 0,0,639,479
POS:COMPUTEROUT 40,0,679,479
DISPLAY:HFILT ON
KEY:EDGE SOFT
KEY:WIDTH WIDE
Case # 2:
In 720x480 VGA resolution, the commands that need to be sent to the MCP are as follows:
POS:COMPUTERIN 0,0,719,479
POS:COMPUTEROUT 0,0,719,479
DISPLAY:HFILT ON
Magni Systems, Inc.
(This is VGA screen size)
(This places the 640 VGA horizontal onto a 720 video
horizontal and video vertical at 480, which is 1-1)
(To get rid of the shimmer then turn the VGA horizontal
filter on)
(To get rid of the bleed through edges when keying, Key
filter is on)
(No Clipping of the graphics edges when keying)
(This is VGA screen size)
(horizontal and vertical is 1-1)
(To get rid of the shimmer then turn the VGA horizontal
filter on)
