Using the Shutdown Feature

The shutdown feature should only be used when performing maintenance on the
Rack Storage/12FC (or FCArray Controller Card) where AC power will be
disconnected for more than 48 hours. The Shutdown dialog box provides a clean
shutdown of the FCArray Controllers in three ways. See Figure 6-17.
The Shutdown dialog box:
Flushes the cache (writing any user data to disk)
Automatically shifts to conservative cache mode
Electrically disconnects the BBU (maintains the battery's charge level
without drawing on battery power)
If power were removed from the system without a clean shutdown, the
BBUs would keep the RAM data intact until all battery power was
exhausted. This would have several undesirable affects, such as:
Shortening useful battery life (there is a limit to the number of
discharge-charge cycles, which causes the BBUs to age.)
Potential loss of user data
