Chapter 6. Removing and replacing system components

Replaceable components are of three types:
• Tier 1 customer replaceable unit (CRU): Replacement of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If Lenovo
installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.
• Tier 2 customer replaceable unit: You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request Lenovo to install it, at
no additional charge, under the type of warranty service that is designated for your server.
• Field replaceable unit (FRU): FRUs must be installed only by Trained service technicians.
See Chapter 9 "Parts listing, ThinkServer RD210 Type 3795, 3796, 3818, and 3819" on page 143 to
determine whether a component is a Tier 1 CRU, Tier 2 CRU, or FRU.

Removing and installing the system battery

Removing the system battery

The following notes describe information that you must consider when replacing the battery:
• Lenovo has designed this product with your safety in mind. The lithium battery must be handled correctly
to avoid possible danger. If you replace the battery, you must adhere to the following instructions.
• If you replace the original lithium battery with a heavy-metal battery or a battery with heavy-metal
components, be aware of the following environmental consideration. Batteries and accumulators that
contain heavy metals must not be disposed of with normal domestic waste. They will be taken back
free of charge by the manufacturer, distributor, or representative, to be recycled or disposed of in a
proper manner.
Note: After you replace the battery, you must reconfigure the server and reset the system date and time.

CAUTION:
When replacing the lithium battery, use only a battery recommended by the manufacturer. If your
system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type
made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly
used, handled, or disposed of. Do not:
– Throw or immerse into water
– Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
– Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.
To remove the system-board battery, complete the following steps:
