Chapter 11: Applying Colors and
Textures
The Scene and Solid Object Editors are used to construct the bare geometry of Atmosphere environments. The
Appearance Editor is used to add the lighting, texture and color that make an environment seem real.

The Appearance Editor

Colors and textures can only be applied to objects in the Appearance Editor's Player view. To open a Player view, select
the View > Player View menu command (F4). This will open a window that displays the Atmosphere environment as
if it were being viewed in the Player plug-in.
You can navigate in Player view by selecting the Navigate Tool (N)
options can be enabled in the Options toolbar.
Use the View > Fit All (Ctrl+0) menu command to quickly frame the environment in the Player view window.

Adding Color

When the Appearance Editor is selected, the icon buttons on the Texture Tools toolbar become active. These tools let
you apply, remove, sample and edit colors and textures.
The Texture Tools apply to colors and textures.
Using the Apply Texture Tool
Colors are applied to whole objects or individual faces using the Apply Texture Tool (K)
small paint bucket. When selected, the cursor will change to a bucket with crosshairs. Clicking in an object applies the
current color as defi ned in the Surface tab of the Inspector palette.
Take care when applying colors to an object. If you miss the object the color may be applied to the background causing
like-colored objects to disappear. There is no undo feature when applying colors and textures, although you can use
the erase tool to remove unwanted colors or textures.
