CHAPTER 12
With Pixel Scaling selected, the Size value expresses the size of an individual pixel of the texture given
Pixel Scaling
in feet. For example, a U-Size of 1 means that each pixel in the texture will be one foot across. Pixel and Tile Scaling
behave similarly, except that the Size values are different.
Tile Scaling makes it easy to size the texture as a tile that fi ts perfectly across the object face. Size expresses
Tile Scaling
the size of the entire image in feet. A U-Size of 1 means that the image is 1 foot across independent of the number of
pixels in the image, and will fi t exactly across faces that are 1, 2 and 3 feet wide, etc.
Parametric Scaling
values of 1 will fi t the selected face exactly regardless of the actual dimensions of the face. If the Size values are
changed to 2, then only half of the texture is fi tted to the surface and a value of 0.5 will make texture images fi t twice
across the surface. Changing the size of the face will cause the texture to automatically scale to fi t. Note that the Size
values in this case express a ratio rather than a dimension like feet.
Projective Scaling
This provides a way to apply textures to oddly shaped objects or apply interesting distortions to applied textures. The
Size values for Projective Scaling express the size of the projected image in feet. The location of the texture projector
relative to the object is set by the Elevation and Azimuth values, and are similar to those used by the sun direction in
lighting (see Chapter 13 "Lighting a Scene").

Tutorial: Scaling a Texture to Fit

Fitting a movie to a screen shows how Parametric Scaling works. To scale a texture to fi t an object face, follow these
steps.
1 Locate the Help\Tutorials\Lounge folder under the directory where Atmosphere was installed. It should be a path
similar to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Atmosphere\Help\Tutorials\Lounge. After navigating to your folder in the open
dialog, select the fi le lounge.atmo and press Open.
2 Select View > Preview View (F4) to open a Player view window and navigate so the screen object you wish to
texture is visible.
3 Select Add Texture Preset from the Paint Presets palette menu and locate the movie.mov fi le in the same folder as
step 1. Click the Open button in the fi le dialog to create the preset.
4 Select the movie preset in the Paint Presets palette and click on the screen object face where it belongs with the
Apply Texture Tool (K).
5 In the Surface tab of the Inspector palette, select the Face option from the Apply To drop-down list. In the Texture
tab, select the Parametric option from the Scaling Type drop-down list and set the Size values to 1. This will fi t the
movie texture exactly on the object face.
Parametric Scaling stretches a texture image so that it exactly fi ts the object face. U and V Size
The Projective Scaling applies the texture image to an object as if it were cast from a fi lm projector.
