Creating Billboards

Billboards are a special type of texture that always face the viewer. These are convenient for objects such as trees where
a single billboard object will present the illusion of a tree without including the complex mesh required to model an
actual tree.

Tutorial: Making a Billboard object

Billboards for Atmosphere include Viewpoint objects made by applying both an image and a matching alpha
(transparency) map to a Viewpoint plane primitive. Billboards are used where true 3D objects are impractical. This
tutorial uses Viewpoint Scene Builder software (see www.viewpoint.com for more information ).
Trees are often modeled as billboard objects.
1 Obtain a high-resolution photo of a tree, with a normal viewing angle and lighting and no overlapping objects.
2 In Adobe Photoshop, or another image editor, cut the tree out from its background, leaving white where you want
transparency.
