Texture Formats

Textures are image fi les that can be wrapped around or tiled over the surface of an object. The fi le formats supported
for textures are GIF, JPEG and PNG. Each of these formats is commonly found on the web. Imported textures appear
as thumbnails in the Paint Presets palette.
GIF
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) supports only 256 colors but offers lossless compression which preserves
image quality better than JPG or PNG. GIF is a good format for textures that contain text, logos and drawings. File
sizes are usually small and load quickly.
Atmosphere doesn't support transparency, interlacing or animation in GIF fi les.
JPEG
The JPEG (JPG) format supports a photo-realistic 16.7 million colors. JPEG compression is lossy but adjustable
to trade image quality for fi le size. JPEG is good for photographs and images with gradients. Files are normally the
smallest.
PNG
The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) can contain 256 or 16.7 million colors and offers both lossy and lossless
compression. PNG fi les are usually larger than JPG, but offer good quality.

Applying Textures

Textures are applied to objects in the Appearance Editor using the Apple Texture Tool (K). The method is the same
except that textures must be imported into the Paint Presets palette before use with the Add Texture Preset command
from the Paint Presets palette menu. Imported textures appear as thumbnails in the Paint Presets palette. Select a
texture, then use the Apply texture Tool (K) to apply to an object or face.
You can import multiple textures at the same time by Shft- or Ctrl-selecting multiple fi le names in the fi le dialog box
before clicking Open.
