Textures cannot be applied to the background, but you can place a texture using an object known as a Sky Dome or a
Sky Cone.

Tutorial: Creating a Sky Cone

A Sky Cone is used to surround your environment with a sky and/or landscaping texture. It consists of two cone
primitives, one subtracting from the other to form a wall around your environment.
To create and texture a Sky Cone object, follow these steps.
1 Open the Scene Editor and add a new Solid Object. Name your object "sky cone."
2 Double click on the sky cone object to activate the Solid Object Editor. Select the Cone tool in the Solid Object
Tools toolbar and click in the Solid Object Editor to add a cone primitive.
3 Drag on the Cone handles to resize the cone until it completely engulfs your environment.
4 With the Cone object selected, Select Edit > Duplicate (Ctrl+D) and duplicate your Cone object.
5 Make this duplicated Cone a subtractive object by enabling the Subtractive option in the Inspector palette.
6 Resize the duplicated Cone object so that it is slightly smaller than the fi rst. Make sure it is completely inside the
fi rst cone, and no edges are overlapping.
7 Select both Cone objects and select the Object > Group (Ctrl+G) menu command.
8 Select View > Player View (F4) to open the Player view.
9 Select the Add Texture Preset from the Paint Presets palette, locate the sky texture and open it in the Paint Presets
palette. Then select the Apply Texture Tool (K) and click on the inside of your sky cone object.
i
Because sky cones can block lighting from the background and the sun it is usually best to import them after lighting
the rest of the scene or load them as a model with a script. Sky cones should have their Light Maps disabled in order
to reduce fi le size.
