Chapter 1

1.8 THREAT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

A hydraulic oil leak is a direct threat to the
natural environment owing to its limited
biodegradability. Repair works with a risk
of leakage of oil, should be carried out in
rooms with an oil resistant surface. In the
event of oil leaking into the environment,
first of all contain the source of the leak,
and then collect the leaked oil using
available means. Collect oil residue with
sorbents or mix the oil with sand, sawdust
or other absorbent materials. Collected
oil contaminants should be stored in an
airtight and marked container, resistant
to hydrocarbons, and then transferred to
an oil waste disposal point. The container
should be kept away from heat sources,
flammable materials and food.
Oil which has been used up or is unsuitable
for further use due to the loss of its prop-
erties is recommended to be stored in its
original packaging in the same conditions
