A typical UTMC communications model, shown schematically below, illustrates the use
of a CORBA interface between UTC instation and Common Database as well as UTMC
compliant communications from on-street equipment to common database. All
equipment connects directly to the communications network and intermediate software
applications called 'Adapters' provide the Simple Neutral Management Protocol (SNMP)
to Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) translation by supporting the
UTMC standard Management Information Bases (MIBs), which provide the open
mechanism for communication to on-street equipment. Access to and support for other
management and information systems are also achieved via adapters with information
shared and exchanged through UTMC standard data objects.
CORBA is the acronym for Common Object Request Broker Architecture, an open
vendor-independent architecture and infrastructure that computer applications use to
work together over networks.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used protocol for monitoring
the health and welfare of network equipment
MIB stands for Management Information Bases and was created as a means to control
the configuration and assist in monitoring internet devices such as routers which may
be in remote locations.
