2.11 Serial Interface IOP (SI)

2.11 Serial Interface IOP (SI)

Introduction

Figure 11 illustrates typical Serial Interface interconnections. One or two model MU-TSIM12 or MU-
TSIA12 Serial Interface FTAs interface to a model MU-PSIM02 Serial Interface IOP through the model
MU-TLPA02 Power Adapter. This illustrates the model MU-TSIM12 FTA interconnections.
The FTA is assigned a unique FTA model number that is identified by the FTA's assembly tab number
on the FTA. The firmware resident in the FTA plug-in module, M1, is preprogrammed at the factory to
accommodate the associated IOP and the configured serial communications interface types (EIA-232 and
EIA-422/485).

EIA-232 and EIA-422/485 interfaces

The Serial Interface FTA has both EIA-232 (RS-232) and EIA-422/485 (RS-422/485) asynchronous
serial communications interfaces, one of which is active, using either a DB-25 or a 5-terminal
compression connector, respectively.

Point-to-point or multidrop interfaces

The EIA-232 interface is a point-to-point interface to which only one serial device can be connected. The
EIA-422/485 interface can be configured as a multidrop interface to which several serial devices can be
connected. System performance is dependent upon the number of devices, their baud rate, the number of
transactions, and the FTA Device Driver firmware.

EIA interface limitations

The EIA-232 interface is limited to a distance of 15 meters (50 feet) maximum, and the EIA-422/485
interface is limited to a distance of 305 meters (1000 feet). However, the total length of the EIA-422/485
interface can be 1200 meters (4000 feet) with the appropriate interface cable.

Power Adapter installation

The Power Adapter can be installed on any available FTA Mounting Channel that is within the 50-meter
(164-foot) maximum cable length requirement using a model MU-KFTAxx cable (the suffix "xx"
represents the length of the cable in meters).
For CE Compliant installations, if the Power Adapter is remotely mounted in a cabinet that is separate
from the cabinet in which its associated IOP is mounted, it is mandatory that a model MU-KFTSxx
shielded IOP to FTA cable be used between the assemblies.

Power Adapter size

The Power Adapter has the same dimensions as an A-size (6 inches) FTA.

New SI IOP Slot Summary display to view Array points built on the SI FTA

Beginning with TPN R686, a new SI IOP Slot Summary display has been introduced that enables you to
directly view the list of array points built against the SI FTA. The display consists of 2 pages: the first 16
points connected to FTA 1 on page 1, and the remaining 16 points connected to FTA 2 on page 2. Use
the Page Up and Page Down buttons to navigate between the 2 pages of the display.
The configured array points are displayed in the ascending order of the array slot numbers. In addition to
all the features of the existing IOP slot summary display, the following key differences must be noted:
The slot number will follow the slot number of the array point type in the ascending order per
FTA.
The value field is not supported since this is an array point type with varying configurations like
flag, numeric or string.
SLOT SELECT target has been removed as the slot numbers listed in this display are that of array points
that can range from 1 – 511, spread across the new 2-page display.
