Cleaning SMA Connectors
Depending on application and environment it may be
appropriate to clean the grounding threads of SMA connectors
(and SMA semi-rigid links where fitted) using the materials in
the following table. This ensures optimum connection and
signal screening.
Description
Compressed Air Can or Blow Brush
Isopropyl Alcohol
Lint-free Swab
Do not insert any tool or object into the SMA connector ports to avoid
damage.
To clean the SMA connectors
1 Disconnect the instrument from the power line before
commencing this cleaning procedure.
2 Apply some isopropyl alcohol to a piece of the clean lint-free
cloth and clean the outer threads of SMA bulkhead
connectors taking care not to introduce cleaning fluid into
center connection.
3 Where a unit has SMA semi-rigid links carefully remove ONE
of these using an appropriate spanner, taking note of
position and orientation. Clean the bulkhead connectors as
in step 2 and clean the inside threads of the SMA link taking
care not to bend/damage the center connector pin.
4 Carefully refit the link taking care not to mis-thread or
overtighten, as damage could result in an expensive repair.
Always use a torque spanner to refit and set to 0.9 Nm.
Repeat for other SMA links and also any SMA cables used in the
test configuration to avoid subsequent contamination of
instrument connectors.
