1. Get the backup media, the Solaris Media Kit. You may already have this kit if you
ordered it with your system. If you did not order the kit with your system, contact
your Sun Sales representative and ask to order the Media Kit for your language
and Solaris version.
2. Follow the installation instructions in the Start Here document that comes with
the kit. You can install the Solaris operating environment and as much of the
supplemental software as you want.
Note – If you reinstall Solaris software to this system manually, you must set the
boot-device variable to match the disk slice where the Solaris software is
installed.
If you accepted the preinstalled software when you powered on the system, the
Solaris software slice differs, depending on which version of the Solaris software
you chose. Solaris 7 3/99 boots from disk:a, but Solaris 8 boots from disk:h. The
following chart shows how the disk slices correspond to the boot-device
variables.

disk:b

To set the boot-device variable, there are two methods, depending on whether the
system is running or halted. For example, to set the boot-device variable to
disk:a:
- If the system is running:
1) Become superuser (root).
2) At the root prompt, type
- If the system is halted, at the ok prompt, type
Note – Limited Export editions of Solaris software include co-packaged software
that has been modified to allow shipment into countries that restrict the importation
of encryption software. Limited Export editions of the Solaris Media Kit are the only
versions of these products that may be shipped to France, Russia, and other
countries that limit the importation of encryption software. Inform your Sun Sales
representative if you need the Limited Export Edition.
