CHAPTER 5: T
This chapter provides an overall technical description of the Series 4900 Sonar
System towfish, the SP-III TPU and the Rack Mount TPU electronics. This
information, which includes block diagrams, printed circuit board descriptions,
and chassis photos with callouts, is useful when performing any troubleshooting
tasks and when installing optional equipment.
5.1

Towfish

The towfish transmits and receives the sonar signals, processes them and outputs
the processed sonar and sensor data to the SP-III TPU or Rack Mount TPU over
the tow cable. The primary active components of the towfish are the sonar
electronics and the two transducer arrays. An optional magnetometer and
responder can also be included. The compass and the pressure and temperature
sensors are located on the electronics chassis.
5.1.1
A block diagram depicting the functional relationships of all of the printed circuit
boards in the sonar electronics is shown in Figure 5-1. All the boards are located
on the towfish electronics chassis which is shown in Figure 5-2.
The printed circuit boards, along with their corresponding part numbers, that make
up the towfish electronics are the following:
• Control Sensor Interface (CSI) board
• Transmitter board
• Receiver board
• Transition board
• 12 VDC Power Supply board
• 24 VDC Power Supply board (optional)
• Power Filter board 12 VDC
• Power Filter board 24 VDC (optional)
• Subsea Telemetry board
• Compass board
