Alternate Solaris Backup Procedure

Refer to the MPS System Operator's Guide and the MPS Disk Mirroring Installation, Configuration
and Recovery manual to see details of the commands to back up data from disk to disk (for
example, tar, dd, and cp).
The tar and cp commands back up files from one mounted file system to another mounted file
system. A slice from the backup drive is mounted onto a directory such as /mnt.
The dd command backs up the entire drive. Slice 2 of the system drive, which represents the entire
drive, is copied to slice 2 of the backup drive.
Backing Up the Entire Drive Using dd
If the disks are of the same type, you can copy the entire drive from one drive to another with the dd
command. The dd command changes the geometry of the backup disk if it is not the same as the
system disk. The following format command shows the same type disks, as shown by the data
between the angled brackets (<>).
