Steering
REPLACE STEERING COLUMN
WARNING
This section is one section of a complete service
manual. Before starting any procedure, read all
warnings and instructions that are located in the
Service Guidelines chapter.
1: There are two allen head set screws holding the
steering shaft to the universal joint. Only one
of the screws must be removed, the other only
needs to be loosened. Refer to the illustration.
Loosen the jam nuts and remove/loosen the
screws.
2: Disconnect the harness from the steering column.
3: Loosen the upper U-bolt and slide the steering
column up and out of the vehicle.
4: Install the steering column in reverse order.
5: Apply thread locking compound on the universal
joint screws.
6: Tighten the upper U-bolt enough to prevent the
steering column from rotating without crushing
the column.
7: Remove the blocks from behind the wheels and
test drive the vehicle.

1: Raise the front of the vehicle and support with
jack stands.
2: There are two allen head set screws holding the
steering shaft to the universal joint. Only one
of the screws must be removed, the other only
needs to be loosened. Refer to the illustration.
Loosen the jam nuts and remove/loosen the
screws.
3: Remove the pitman arm.
4: Support the steering gear so that it cannot fall out
of the vehicle.
5: Remove the bolts holding the steering gear to the
vehicle frame and remove the steering gear from
the vehicle.
6: Install in reverse order.
• Torque the pitman arm nut to torque specified in
the table at the end of this section.
• Apply thread locking compound on the universal
joint screws.
7: Remove the blocks from behind the wheels and
test drive the vehicle.
