FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT

WARNING
This section is one section of a complete service manual. Before
starting any procedure, read all warnings and instructions that
are located in the Service Guidelines chapter.
Inspection, Axle Centers
1: Raise the front of the vehicle and support with jack stands.
2: Measure the distances from the rear of the lower axle beam to the rear wall
of the wheel well on both sides of the axle beam next to the steering knuckle.
Adjust the lower suspension links so that the distance is between 10-1/8 to
10-3/8 inches (25.7 - 26.35 cm).
Note: The difference between the left and right measurement should be no more
than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm).
3: Measure the distances from the rear of the upper axle beam to the rear wall
of the wheel well on both sides of the axle beam next to the steering knuckle.
Adjust the upper wishbone link so that the distance is 1/2 inch (13 mm) less
than the lower measurement.
NOTE: Do not continue with the front end alignment until the axle centers are
properly adjusted.
Center the Wheels
4: Center the steering gear and tie it off so that
it cannot rotate.
5: Loosen the ball joint clamps on the drag link.
6: Adjust the drag link so that the steering pivot
arm is parallel with the axle beam.
7: Position the ball joint clamps as shown and
tighten to torque specification list in the table
at the end of this section.
8: Loosen the ball joint clamps on the left and
right tie rods (arrows in illustration).
9: Position a straight edge along the right side of the vehicle and adjust the right side tie rod so that the front
wheel is parallel with the rear wheel.
Toe In
10: Using a piece of chalk, mark a line around the center of both front tires.
11: Measure the distance between the lines at the front of the tires.
12: Measure the distance between the lines at the rear of the tires.
13: Adjust the left side tie rod so that the distance at the front and rear of the
tires is the same.
14: Position the ball joint clamps as shown and tighten to torque specification list
in the table at the end of this section.
WARNING
Clamps positioned so that they contact other components may result in steering failure
and loss of control of the vehicle causing severe bodily injury and/or property damage.
15: Reconnect the main battery connector.
16: Untie the steering wheel.
17: Rotate the steering wheel from a full left turn to a full right turn
and make sure that the ball joint clamps do not contact any other
component.
18: Remove the blocks from behind the wheels and test drive the
vehicle.
