About SCALANCE W

3.1

Overview

SCALANCE W is a simple, easy to deploy turn-key WLAN solution consisting of one or more
APs. An Ethernet port with routable connectivity to the Internet or a self-enclosed network is
used for deploying an SCALANCE W Wireless Network. An SCALANCE W Access Point
(AP) can be installed at a single site or deployed across multiple geographically-dispersed
locations. Designed specifically for easy deployment, and proactive management of
networks, SCALANCE W is ideal for small customers or remote locations without any on-site
IT administrator.
SCALANCE W consists of an AP and a Virtual Controller. The Virtual Controller resides
within one of the APs. In an SCALANCE W deployment scenario, only the first AP needs to
be configured. After the first AP is configured, the other APs inherit all the required
configuration information from the Virtual Controller. SCALANCE W continually monitors the
network to determine the AP that should function as the Virtual Controller at any time, and
the Virtual Controller will move from one AP to another as necessary without impacting
network performance.
