20 AWS - WELD INSPECTION

20.1 ABOUT AWS
Further information on AWS - Weld Inspection can be found on the Elcometer NDT Knowledge

AWS D1.1 S
: There are specific transducers that are required by the D1.1 standard. The
TANDARD
frequency specified by the standard is 2-2.5MHz. Please refer to the standard for further
information.
20.2 SETTING UP THE AWS FUNCTION
Before setting up and using the AWS function you must:
1. Conduct a two point calibration - see "Known Thickness Calibration" on page 30.
2. Set up TRIG mode - see "Setting up Trigonometry Mode" on page 37.

ADJUSTING AWS SETTINGS
1. Select MENU/AWS then the desired function.
2. Use the LEFT and RIGHT keys to switch on or off, or to select value
3. Press MEAS to return to the measurement screen.
20.3 USING AWS
1. Couple the transducer to the first
calibration standard and peak up on
the reflector to achieve maximum
signal amplitude.
2. Enable the AWS function and adjust
the AWS settings to your requirements
(see "Adjusting TCG Settings" on
page 42). Ensure that the value of
DRAW is set to ON.
A highlighted cursor is displayed in the
waveform area, starting at the left most
side of the measurement screen.
3. In the hot menu, scroll to GATE1.
Function
Enables the AWS function.
Disables the AWS function.
When disabled, all the other menu items are greyed out.
Enables reference gain.
Disables reference gain.
% Screen Height is an arbitrary level, and is not specified by the
AWS D1.1. Set a value that will optimise viewing defects that are
larger and smaller than the reference level. Typically this level is set
between 50% to 80% of full screen height.
