ple, coat hangers, on the grab handles or
coat hooks.
It is not possible to rule out the risk of
injuries being caused by an airbag due to
the high speed with which the airbag is
required to deploy.
How the airbags work
The airbags inflate within milliseconds.
If the airbag has been deployed, the 6
airbag indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up.
i
If the airbags are deployed, you will
hear a bang and a small amount of powder
may also be released. Only in rare cases
will the bang damage your hearing. The
powder that is released generally does
not constitute a health hazard.
Airbag deployment slows down and
restricts the movement of the vehicle occu-
pant. When the vehicle occupant comes into
contact with the front airbags and head/
thorax sidebags, hot gas flows out of them.
This reduces the force acting on the occu-
pant's head and chest. These airbags are
therefore depressurised after the acci-
dent.
G
WARNING
After an airbag has been deployed:
airbag parts are hot. Do not touch them,

it must be replaced at a qualified spe-

cialist workshop which has the necessary
specialist knowledge and tools to carry
out the work required. In particular,
work relevant to safety or on safety-rela-
ted systems must be carried out at a spe-
cialist workshop that is qualified for
smart electric drive vehicles. smart rec-

this purpose.
G
WARNING
A small amount of powder is released when
an airbag deploys. This powder does not
constitute a health hazard, nor does it
indicate a fire in the vehicle. The powder
may cause short-term breathing difficul-
ties to persons suffering from asthma or
other pulmonary conditions. In order to
prevent possible breathing difficulties
you should leave the vehicle as soon as it is
safe to do so, or open a window to get fresh
air.
Driver's airbag/front-passenger front
airbag
The front airbags are designed to increase
protection for the driver's and front-pas-
senger's head and chest.
The driver's front airbag and front-
passenger front airbag are deployed:
at the start of an accident with a high
R
rate of vehicle acceleration or deceler-
ation in a longitudinal direction
independently of other airbags in the
R
vehicle
if the vehicle overturns, the airbags are
R
generally not deployed. However, they
are deployed if the system detects high
vehicle deceleration in a longitudinal
direction.
