cialist workshop that is qualified for
smart electric drive vehicles.
Only replace the battery with a battery
R
that has a central gas-venting cover.
This prevents corrosion damage.
If you leave your vehicle parked up for
R
longer periods, disconnect the battery
and charge it approximately every six
months.
If your vehicle has been parked up for a
R
longer period of time without the battery
being disconnected (three to four weeks),
recharge the battery.
If you plan to leave your vehicle parked
R
up for longer than six weeks, contact a
specialist workshop that is qualified for
smart electric drive vehicles.

Jump-starting

Notes
The drive system cannot be started if the
12 V battery is discharged. This is not
dependant on whether the high-voltage
battery is charged or not. The vehicle can-
not be jump-started if the high-voltage
battery is discharged. The battery must be
charged first.
The drive system can be started using
another vehicle.
Start your vehicle's engine using the jump
leads and the battery of the donor vehicle.
Observe the following instructions when
doing so:
G
WARNING
There is a risk of acid burns when jump-
starting a vehicle or charging the battery
due to the gases which escape from the bat-
tery. Therefore, do not lean over the bat-
tery.
G
WARNING
Gases escaping from the battery during
jump-starting may cause minor explosions.
Avoid creating sparks. Keep naked flames
away from the battery, and do not smoke.
Comply with safety precautions and take
protective measures when handling batter-
ies.
! Avoid repeated and lengthy starting
attempts.
Never start the vehicle using a rapid
battery charger.
Only use batteries with an equal nominal
R
voltage (12 volts).
Make sure that the battery of the donor
R
vehicle does not have a significantly
lower capacity than the discharged bat-
tery.
Use jump leads with a sufficient cross-
R
section and insulated terminal clamps
from a qualified specialist workshop,
e.g. a smart Centre.
Make sure that the two vehicles do not
R
touch.
Route the jump leads so that they cannot
R
be caught by rotating components in the
engine compartment.
Do not disconnect the discharged battery
R
from the vehicle's electrical system.
