Disconnecting the jump leads
X
Do not switch on electrical consumers
such as fans or the rear window heating
until the ignition is switched on.
Do not switch on the lighting system.
This reduces the risk of creating sparks
when the jump leads are disconnected.

Leave the drive system for two to three
minutes after it has been switched on.
X
Remove the jump leads from negative ter-
minals = and ? of both batteries,
beginning with your own battery.
X
Remove the jump leads from positive ter-
minals : and ; of both batteries.
X
Have the battery checked at a qualified
specialist workshop.

WARNING
Do not use the vehicle's towing equipment
during vehicle recovery or to secure it. The
towing eye could otherwise be torn from its
mounting which could result in injuries.
Always have your vehicle transported when:
the vehicle's N high-voltage elec-
R
trical system warning lamp lights up in
the instrument cluster.
Do no tow (away)
the
R
appears in the instrument cluster.
the multifunction display is inopera-
R
tive.
one or more of the following warning
R
lamps light up:
þ drive diagnostics (red)
-
# 12-volt battery
-
the brake pedal starts pulsating as soon
R
as towing starts.
the vehicle is to be transported over a
R
longer distance.

When towing the vehicle, please note the
following:
Only experienced persons should tow
R
vehicles.
It is advisable to have your vehicle towed
R
by a vehicle from a qualified specialist
workshop.
When towing, observe the legal require-
R
ments of the country concerned.
Switch on the ignition when your vehicle
R
is being towed.
Move the gear lever to position N. The
R
multifunction display must show N.
Do not exceed a maximum speed of
R
50 km/h.
Do not travel further than 50 km.

WARNING
Towing the vehicle at high speeds and over
an extended distance could cause the elec-
tric drive or a high-voltage component to
overheat. This could cause the vehicle to
catch fire. You and others could be seri-
ously or even fatally injured.
Therefore, always tow the vehicle at speeds
of less than 50 km/h and no greater than
50 km.
! Tow the vehicle at less than 50 km/h and
no more than 50 km. There is otherwise a
risk of damaging the electric drive or a
high-voltage component.
! Do not tow any other vehicles with the
smart electric drive. There is otherwise
a risk of damaging the electric drive or a
high-voltage component.
When towing the vehicle, all four of its
R
wheels must be in contact with the
ground.
Ideally, use a towing bar to tow the vehi-
R
cle. Use elastic polyamide cables or pol-
yamide bands when using a tow cable.
Secure the towing eyes on the same side
R
on both vehicles.
