7.3 Measurement mode TopCOAT

Applications

The TopCOAT method is used for the determination of
wall thickness and coating thickness on coated test ob-
jects.
It is thus possible to carry out residual wall thickness
measurements through coatings on the basis of the first
backwall echo.
The sound velocities in the test object and in the coating
must be known for the application of the measurement
mode TopCOAT. These sound velocities can be
● entered manually,
● determined using the measurement mode Auto-V
(see Chapter 7.2 Measurement mode Auto-V,
page 7-6),
● determined by means of calibration blocks (described
later in this section).
DMS Go+

Choosing the probe

To be able to use the TopCOAT function, you have to
connect a special 4-element probe to the DMS Go+.
The following probes from GE are suitable for the Top-
COAT method:
● TC-560

Activating TopCOAT

– Connect a suitable probe to the instrument.
– In the function group PROBE&CAL, select the func-
tion PROBE.
– Choose the connected probe. The instrument is im-
mediately adjusted.
– Select the function TG MODE and choose the option
TOP-COAT.
