Configuring the DHCP server

Using a DHCP server to assign IP addresses to the phones is not obligatory, but it simplifies the
management of addresses and reduces the risk of errors (IP address duplications, etc.).
You can use the DHCP server available on Windows 2000 or 2003 servers, a server, or use a free
DHCP software solution, for example TurboDHCP.
While configuring the DHCP server, define the IP address range to assign to the phones (the
range), the subnet mask, the default gateway and duration of lease.
If a large number of SIP phones are deployed, DHCP automates the configuration of the phones.
The configuration of extended option 066 allows the DHCP server to provide the SIP phone with
the address of a TFTP server. This server will then be used by the phone to download its
configuration files.
Example: deploying the Windows 2000 DHCP server
9.12.2.1 Installing the Windows 2000 DHCP server
In Start --> Settings--> Control panel --> Add/remove programs --> Add/remove Windows
components:
Click on the 'Networking services' line (do not tick the associated box) then click Details.
Choose DHCP protocol then click OK.
Windows 2000 then installs the DHCP server.
9.12.2.2 Configuring the Windows 2000 DHCP server
In Start --> Programs --> Administration tools --> DHCP:
Configure the IP address to distribute:
Action --> New range: the 'New range' wizard appears.
Give a name to this range (for example: 'SIP phones').
Define the IP addresses to distribute and the associated subnet mask.
Enter possible exclusions (IP addresses that should not be distributed).
Define the duration of lease, that is the IP address lease time: for the SIP phones, a long or
indefinite period is good; the phones will thus always have the same IP address.
Accept the current option configuration, configure the default router and click 'Add':
Domain name and DNS server: leave the fields blank.
WINS server: leave the fields blank.
Activate the range and close the wizard.
