5.4 Handling and selection of ear tips

Always use the dedicated ear tips from Sanibel for OAE measurements. Use of an incorrect ear tip could
invalidate the OAE measurement.
Neonatal probe ear tips: Blue 4mm, Red 4.5mm & Green 5mm, must only be used together with the dedicated
purple neonatal probe tip.
Standard probe ear tips: Grey and Black: 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15 & 18mm, must only be used together with the
dedicated black standard probe tip.
Clear probe ear tips: Various colours: 3-5, 4-7 & 5-8mm (flanged) and 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19mm
(mushroom), must only be used together with the dedicated clear probe tip.
1. The Sanibel ear tips are single use only and should not be reused. Reuse of ear tips can lead to the
spread of infection from patient to patient.
2. The probe must be fitted with an ear tip of a suitable type and size before testing. Your choice will
depend on the size and shape of the ear canal and ear.
For OAE testing, the use of a mushroom shaped ear tip is recommended in order to
provide an airtight seal in the ear canal. Make sure that the ear tip inserts completely into
the ear canal before starting a measurement. Mushroom shaped ear tips allow 'hands-
free' testing. This reduces the chance of contact noise disturbing the measurement.
Flanged-style ear tips may also be used for OAE testing and are particularly suitable when
testing infants and young children with small ear canals.
Ensure that the ear tip(1) is pushed all the way down to the probe base (2), leaving no gap, before testing.
