4.
Drain
and
refill the system as described in
steps
1,
2, and 3 a sufficient number of times
until
the drained
liquid is
colorless.
5. Allow system
to drain
completely and
then
close radiator drain
valve
tightly.
6. Add
the
necessary
amount
of
high quality
inhibited glycol
base
coolant
meeting
GM
Specification
1899-M to provide the required
freezing and corrosion
protection (at least to
O'
F.)
7. Run
engine
until normal
operating
tempera-
ture is
reached.
8. Check and adjust level of coolant
after
system
has
cooled sufficiently
to
remove
radiator cap.
It
is
the owner's responsibility
to keep the freeze
protection at a
level
commensurate with
the tem-
peratures which
may
OCCur
in the area in
which
the
vehicle will
be
operated.
Regardless
of whether
freezing temperatures are or
are not
expected,
cooling system
protection
should
be maintained at
least
to
O'
F. to
provide
adequate corrosion pro-
tecti.on.
When coolant additions are required because of
coolant
loss
or to provide additional
protection
against freezing at temperatures
lower
than
·
20
°F
(-32
'
F in Canada), a sufficient amount of an
ethylene glycol base coolant meeting GM
Speci-
fication 1899-M should be used.
NOTE: Alcohol
or methanol base coolants or
49
plain water a re not recommended for your
vehicle at any time.
The coolant level should be approximately one
inch below bottom
of
the filler neck
on
downflow
radiator when
engine is cold. On crossflow ra-
diators,
if the engine is
cold,
the
coolant
level
should
be
three inches
below bottom
of
filler neck
or
up
to
the mark
on
the
side of the
radiator. On
PA20-30
models
the coolant
level
should
be
'h"
to
1" below bottom
of
filler neck when
engine
is
hot.
If
checked when engine is
cold, the
coolant
level
should
just
cover
the
ends of
the
tubes.
DO NOT
OVERFILL.
Thennostat
The
cooling system
is protected
and controlled
by
a
thermostat installed in the
engine coolant
outlet
to maintain a satisfactory operating
tem-
perature of
the
engine.
This thermostat is de-
signed for continuous
use through both winter
and summer and
need not be
changed
seasonally.
Vlhen
replacement
is necessary,
specify
United
Delco
parts.
RADIATOR
PRESSURE CAP
The
radiator cap, a
13-
or
15-lb. pressure type
(see page 68),
must
be
installed
tightly,
otherwise
coolant may be
lost
and
damage
to engine may
result from overheating.
Radiator
pressure
caps
should be checked
periodically for proper
opera-
tion.
If
replacement
is required
specify
AC
.
