CAUTION: For towing, the transmission should
be in neutral and the engine ignition should
be "off".
CAUTION: If vehicle is towed on its front
wheels only, the steering wheel must be
secured with the wheels in a straight ahead
position.
TOWING (Four Wheel Drive Trucks)
It is recommended that the truck be towed with
the front wheels off the ground. The truck can be
towed, however, with the rear wheels off the
ground if there is damage
in
the rear wheel area
In this event, the transmission selector lever
should be placed in the "N" (neutral) position
and the front drive disengaged. Towing speeds
should not exceed 35 mph for distances up to
50
miles.
If truck is towed on its front wheels, the
steering wheel should be secured to keep the
front wheels
in
a straight-ahead position.
When towing the vehicle at slow speeds (ap-
prox. 20 mph), for a very short distance only, the
transmission must be in neutral and the transfer
case MUST be in "TWO WHEEL HIGH."
When towing the vehicle at faster speeds for
greater distances, the following steps MUST be
taken:
• If front wheels are on the road, disconnect the
front drive shaft.
• If rear wheels are on the road, disconnect the
rear drive shaft.

POSITRACTION AND NO SPIN REAR AXLE
The above axles, optional at extra cost, provide
additional traction on snow,
ice,
mud, sand, and
gravel,
particularly when one rear wheel is on a
surface
providing poor traction.
During normal driving and cornering, these
units function as a standard differential. When
one wheel encounters a slippery surface, however,
the driving force to the rear is directed to the
·
wheel having the better traction.
CAUTION: Never run the engine with one drive
wheel off the ground, since the vehicle may
drive through the wheel remaining on the
ground. Care should be taken to avoid sudden
accelerations when both drive wheels are on
a slippery surface. A heavy throttle may cause
both rear wheels to spin. This could allow the
rear end of the vehicle to slide sideways on a
crowned road or when in a turn.
NOTE:
On
%
-ton trucks, when starting with one
wheel on an excessively slippery surface, slight
application of the parking brake (approximately
one-third on) may be necessary to help energize
the differential to gain maximum traction. Release
brake when traction is regained.
