4 Operation

4.1 Preparations for recommissioning the engine after extended
out-of-service periods (>3 months)
Preconditions
☑ Engine shut down and secured against being restarted.
☑ MTU Corrosion-proofing and Reproofing Regulations (A001070/..) are available.
Recommissioning after long out-of-service periods (>3 months)

Action
Remove corrosion-proofing (→ MTU Corrosion-proofing and Reproofing Regu-
lations A001070/..).
Lubricate valve gear every ≥ 6 months (→ Page 93).
Check engine oil level (→ Page 123).
Crank engine using starting system (→ Page 85).
Fill with fuel (if fitted).
If engine has been out of service for more than 1 year, change engine cool-
ant (→ Page 138).
Change charge-air coolant (→ Page 148).
Check engine coolant level (→ Page 137);
Check charge-air coolant level (→ Page 147).
Preheat coolant with coolant preheating unit (if available).
Check electrical connections (→ Page 165).
Only on engines without oil priming pump
Fill HP fuel pump with fresh engine oil (→ Page 98).
