The paper path's operation

Phaser 300i and 300RX Color Printer
The following illustrates the paper path in action.

Paper loading

The drum reverses from its home position to the paper loading position. (The
paper edge/drum position sensor detects home position by sensing a hole in the
drum.) At paper load position the paper clamp is set just below the pivoting
paper guide, ready to receive a sheet of media.
The paper feed rollers are clutched so that when the paper feed motor rotates in
the counterclockwise direction it drives only the pick roller, rotating in the
clockwise direction it drives the feed rollers. (Rotation directions are viewed
from the right-side of the printer.)
The paper feed motor drives the pick roller to draw a sheet of paper from the
paper tray to the feed rollers. Upon reaching the feed rollers, the sheet of paper
buckles slightly against the rollers to align itself parallel to the paper path. The
motor then reverses to drive the feed rollers and pulls the paper to the paper
clamp. The paper again buckles against the paper clamp to align itself to the
paper path. When the manual-feed sensor is activated, the paper feed motor
only turns in the clock-wise direction to draw paper through the feed rollers.
