DRM – Dynamic Radio Management
Example 2
AP3 and AP4 are placed on opposite walls of another conference room. When ATPC is enabled, the room is
empty so the attenuation between the two Wireless APs is minimal. Both Wireless APs stabilize their Tx power at
6dBm using the default settings, but the site survey shows that both Wireless APs should be operating at 1dBm.
If the user set the Tx Power Adjust setting to -5dB, the ATPC will change the Current Tx Power setting on both
Wireless APs from 6dBm to 1dBm. If the user leaves the Tx Power Adjust setting at 0dB and sets the Max Tx
Power at 1dBm, the actual Tx Power will also be 1dBm. The difference between the two scenarios is obvious
when the room fills with people and the attenuation between the two Wireless APs increases. In the first case,
the ATPC algorithm will increase the Current Tx Power on both Wireless APs to compensate the attenuation
introduced by the people. In the second case, Current Tx Power will remain at 1dBm as limited by the Max Tx
Power setting.
9 Because guaranteeing coverage is more important than minimizing interference, it is recommended
at this stage to adjust the Min Tx Power setting for each Wireless AP to be equal to the Current Tx
Power setting. This guarantees that the Tx power will not reduce in case of RF environment changes.
To do so, for each Wireless AP and each radio, do the following:
a Navigate to the corresponding Wireless AP radio configuration screens.
b Set the Min Tx Power to be equal to the Current Tx Power Level.
c Click Save.
By adjusting the Tx Power Adjust and Min Tx Power properly, the ATPC will be able to increase Tx
power in case the RF environment changes, but will not be allowed to reduce the Tx power.
2 – Enabling ATPC in an existing deployment
For an existing deployment that does not use ATPC, it is recommended to enable ATPC in order to take
advantage of the on-the-fly automatic adjustment and increase the network reliability. However, exercise
