Grounding requirements

The three basic methods for mounting the satellite dish
(non-penetrating mount, trimast, and pole mount) require
different grounding procedures, as specified in National
Electrical Code (NEC) Articles 250, 800, 810, and 820. This
chapter describes procedures for grounding a mast and grounding
a metal pole. Topics include:
• Grounding the mast on page 79
• Grounding the metal pole on page 84
• Grounding the non-penetrating mount on page 89
Check the manufacturer's non-penetrating mount manual for
instructions for grounding that mount. Remember that grounding
at enterprise or business installations may be subject to different
requirements. Check with the local building code authorities to
ensure you fulfill all grounding requirements.
Both the trimast and metal pole use the RG6 quad-shielded
coaxial cable shield, ground block, and ground wire ("grounding
conductor" in NEC nomenclature) for the system and protective
ground. The RG6 quad-shielded coaxial cable is connected to the
ground block and serves as the system and protective ground. The
ground block is located at the point the coaxial cable enters the
building. The ground wire is connected to the ground block and
routed to the earth ground using one of the three ground schemes
in Figure 34.
The ground wire can be 8 AWG aluminum, unless it would come
into direct contact with masonry or soil, or will not be terminated
at least 18 inches from earth. (Note that if 8AWG aluminum
ground wire is used, and the building earth ground is provided by
a ground rod, then at least 18 inches of that ground rod must be
above ground.) If the ground wire will not meet these conditions,
then you must use 14 AWG copper ground wire. Note that one
installation configuration may require 6AWG copper ground
wire; see Grounding using RG-6 non-quad shielded cable on
page 87.
