Measure the distance of the proposed cable route between the
antenna and the IDU. Add 20 feet (6 meters) for service loops.
Generally, the first choice for IFL cabling is to use an existing
portal conduit. If a conduit is not available, recommend a
solution. Other possibilities are:
• Entry through a stairwell or other space
• New drilling (vertical or horizontal)
Various conditions can affect DIRECWAY installation and
operation. These conditions should be considered during the site
survey and include:

• Weather

• Line of sight
• Cable grade
• Poor installation practices
If any of these affect the quality or success of the installation,
resolve them or reschedule the installation.
Weather
Weather conditions can affect installations in the following ways.
• Safety - installation safety can be affected by lightning, affect
of precipitation on work surfaces, wind, and similar factors.
• Equipment performance - ODUs and IDUs may not function
optimally, or at all, under certain weather conditions.
Equipment operation can be affected by rain fade, overcast skies,
antenna icing, and wind, which can all affect signal reception.
Be sure the line of sight to the satellite is clear before beginning
installation. If line of sight is causing problems with an existing
installation, the antenna may need to be moved to a different
location. First consider whether the problem could be solved by
other means, such as trimming vegetation.
As part of the pre-installation check, make sure you are using the
correct type and grade of cable. If the cable in an existing
installation is out of specification, replace it.
Poor installation practices can prevent successful, quality
installation and operation. Do not engage in such practices. Poor
practices include:
• Improperly installed mounts. A plumb pole and mast are
critical to the installation. In addition, the mount installation
