Installing the .98 m antenna
mount on a metal pole

RF safety considerations

Chapter 4 • Installing mounts

1035678-0001 DRAFT Revision 1.04
The .98 m satellite dish can be installed on a metal pole. You will
attach the AZ/EL and reflector directly to the pole. You will not
need the trimast.
Make sure the parts used conform to the specifications in the
table below. In addition, note:
• The hole must be at least 42 inches deep.
• The soil bearing capacity should be no less than 2000 PSF.
• Concrete should be poured against undisturbed soil.
The .98 m antenna pole mount must be enclosed by a fence. For
details, see Fencing specifications on page 76.
Table 10: Additional parts and tools needed for .98 m metal pole
• Metal pole, 2-3/8-inch outside diameter, schedule 80 galvanized
water pipe, 63 inches long (longer if needed to ensure the bottom
edge of the antenna dish is at least 5 feet above ground level.
Should conform with ASTM A36 structural steel and ASTM 53
pipe.
• 1.5-inch x 1.5-inch x 3/16-inch HRS angle, 8 inches long, TYP 2
PL. Should conform with ASTM A36 structural steel and ASTM
53 pipe. Can also use alternative methods of rebar or bolt.
• Required number of 40-pound bags of quick-setting concrete or
®
Quickcrete
. All concrete should conform to building code
standards and have a minimum compressive strength of 3000
PSI at 28 days, as per ACI-318-77.
DANGER
• Call local utility companies before digging to avoid
striking underground cables, pipes, or lines.
• Striking or cutting underground cables, pipes, or lines
can cause personal injury or property damage.
1. Install the angles on the pole by drilling holes in the pole and
securing with carriage bolts. If you do not want to use angles,
drill two holes at approximately 90° to each other and install
#5 or larger rebar through the holes. You can also simply drill
a hole through the pole and install a large carriage bolt.
2. Dig a hole at least 16 inches in diameter and at least 42 inches
deep. See Figure 28. If the work site is in an area where the
frost line goes below 42 inches, dig the hole at least 6 inches
deeper than the frost line. Consult with local building
officials if you are unsure what the frost line is in your
locality. Remember to adjust the pole length accordingly.
3. Place the bottom 42 inches of the pole in the hole and use
rocks or guy wires to stabilize the pole vertically.
