Survey tasks

The survey should include these tasks (and possibly others), as
applicable:
• Determine building to be used for antenna installation.
• Determine where the IDU will be located.
• Select possible antenna mount installation sites from
• Evaluate IFL routing.
The installation specification will often specify where the IDU
located
will be located. IDUs are typically located in equipment rooms or
closets, although they may sometimes be located in an office.
Knowing the IDU's location is important because typically the
antenna is installed as close to the IDU as possible, to minimize
IFL cable runs. In addition, you will want to be sure the IDU is
installed with sufficient ventilation space. Ventilation
requirements are specified in the IDU installation manual.
Proper location is very important for achieving a high signal
installation
quality factor (SQF). A site could have a number of acceptable
installation locations. Find the one that best conforms to any
installation specification and/or the customer's preferences,
maximizes SQF, and meets safety requirements.
Generally, a proper location must have a clear view of the
southern sky and be out of the way of activities. The location
should be within the cable length limits specified in Cable
specifications on page 2.
Note: If an installation specification has been provided, it will
often specify an ODU location. It will also often specify the mount
that is preferred, and the acceptable alternatives if the preferred
mount cannot be used.
A good antenna installation location also has the following
attributes:
• Sound and safe mounting surface
• Installation activities can be conducted safely
• Unobstructed line of sight to the target satellites
candidates identified based on satellite location.
– Verify the line of sight for these locations.
– Determine the best location for the antenna.
– Identify building parts that may be used as electrical
grounds for outdoor equipment.
– Identify inside wiring distribution pathways.
