Bay Networks Remote Access Concentrators
(RACs)
The 5399 RAC and the 8000 RAC introduce a number of new features.
The 5399 RAC is a member of the existing 539x family of Remote Access
products built for the Bay Networks 5000 hub. The new high-performance
Remote Access Concentrator features industry-leading dial access
density, security, call management, and BayDSP integrated Digital Signal
Processing (DSP) modem technology. The modular design of the Bay
Networks carrier-class remote access concentrator solution enables
flexible, high-performance configurations and consolidates all remote
access traffic from dial-in analog and ISDN ports as well as industry-
standard WAN and remote connection types onto a single, integrated
module. The product provides two PRI lines or Channelized T1/E1 lines
with support for up to 48 industry-standard V.34 33.6 Kb/s digital
modems for North American networks or 62 modems for international
networks with built-in redundancy. Up to 576 digital modems can be
configured in a single 5000 MSX chassis, and 2,304 digital modems per
standard 8- foot carrier-class cabinet for North America. Up to 744 digital
modems per 5000 MSX chassis are supported for international networks.
The 8000 RAC is a standalone version of the 5399 RAC, and offers all
of the features furnished by the 5399 RAC, plus an external synchronous
port. Both RAC models also support an optional data compression card.
BayDSP (Digital Signal Processing) Modem
Technology
Digital modems provide more density, reliability, and statistical
information pertaining to calls. Existing analog modem technology does
not allow for migration to new industry standards without significant
hardware changes. DSP technology is programmable, allowing quick
adoption of new standards and customized features.
