2. Place a drain pan a under the gear oil
drain hole.
3. Remove the gear oil drain screw b and
gasket c. NOTICE: If there is an
excessive quantity of metal particles
on the magnetic gear oil drain screw
b, this can indicate lower unit
problem.

TIP:
If a magnetic gear oil drain screw is
equipped, remove all metal particles from the
screw before installing it.
4. Remove the gear oil check screw d and
gasket c to allow the oil to drain
completely. NOTICE: Check the used
oil after it has been drained. If the oil
is milky, water is getting into the gear
case which can cause gear damage.
5. Insert the gear oil pump into the drain
hole and slowly fill with gear oil until oil
flows out of the check hole and no air
bubbles are visible.

Hypoid gear oil
API: GL-4
SAE: 90
Oil quantity:
Regular rotation model:
0.980 L (1.036 US qt, 0.862 lmp qt)
Counter rotation model:
0.870 L (0.919 US qt, 0.765 lmp qt)
6. Install new gaskets c and the gear oil
check screw d, quickly install the gear
oil drain screw b, and then tighten them
to the specified torque.
Gear oil check screw d and
gear oil drain screw b:
9 N·m (0.9 kgf·m, 6.6 ft·lb)
Checking the gear shift operation
1. Check that the gear shift operates
smoothly when shifting it from N position
to F or R. Adjust the shift cable length if
the gear shift cannot be operated
smoothly. For adjusting the shift cable
length, see "Installing the shift cable" (3-
8) step 7–step 12.
2. Check the neutral switch for continuity.
See "Checking the neutral switch" (5-37).
Lubricating the outboard motor
1. Apply water resistant grease to the
areas.
