Problems on the Road
If an overheat warning appears
while you are driving, there could
be a problem.
If you get the overheat warning
with no sign of steam:
1. Turn off your air conditioner
and turn on the heater at high
speed.
2. If you're in a traffic jam, shift
to N (Neutral).
If the overheat warning no longer
displays or the coolant tempera-
ture gage does not show an over-
heat condition, you may continue
to drive the vehicle for 10 minutes,
but at a slower speed.
If the warning does not reappear,
continue to drive normally.
If the light stays on or the coolant
temperature gage still shows an
overheat condition, pull over, stop
and park your vehicle right away.

If there is still no sign of steam, run
the engine at idle speed for about
3 minutes.
If the overheat warning continues,
turn off the engine and get
everyone out of the vehicle right
away.
See "Overheat Protection Mode"
later in this section for
information.
CAUTION
The electric engine cooling fan
can start even if the engine is
not running. Be careful around
it.
Fans or other moving engine
parts can injure you badly. Keep
your hands, hair and loose
clothing away from moving
parts once the engine is
running.
If the engine is overheated, the
engine cooling fans should be
running. If not, stop the engine
and have the vehicle serviced.
The vehicle should be parked on a
level surface.
If the coolant in the surge tank has
been boiling, do not touch it until
it has cooled down.
If the engine compartment is
warm, the level should be at or
above the FROID/FULL COLD
mark. If the engine is cool the
level should be near the FROID/
FULL COLD mark.
If the coolant level is low, there
may be a leak in the cooling
system.
CAUTION
Engine parts may be very hot.
Do not touch them.
