It is difficult to define the communication area of a wireless LAN network because of the
wireless (radio) characteristic. Depending on where the equipment is installed or how the
office is constructed, the network area may inadvertently allow communication data
leaks.
It is important to intensify security when operating the wireless LAN network.
The following explains the area that are important to enhance security.
Network name (ESSID). The network name (ESSID) is a group name that logically
identifies the wireless LAN network. Because it is not a password but an identifier, its
security is not enhanced.
Filtering by MAC address. Access from a wireless LAN station with an unknown MAC
address can be denied.
WEP. An encrypted network packet makes it difficult to illegally access the network
and to decrypt communication contents. Network throughput is deteriorated by
encryption processing.
Communication area. After the equipment is installed, investigate the communication-
enabled area by using the station.
Security enhancement by upper layer. If VPN or IPsec can be used, security can
further be enhanced.
