Marine Diesel Engines
Indicators
Oil pressure meter: indicates the measure of the engine oil pressure (bar). The indication of the oil
pressure works only when the engine is running and it indicates the current pressure. When the engine is
on, the oil pressure is usually somewhere between 2 and 6 bar. If the oil pressure goes below 1 bar, the
alarm light for the oil pressure may light up and then you may hear the acoustic alarm buzzer.
RPM counter: Indicates the measure the engine crankshaft revolution per minute. The cruising hours
shown on the display at the bottom of the RPM counter provides information in regard to how many hours
of navigation the engine has done in total.
Coolant temperature meter: indicates the engine coolant temperature (°C). The correct water coolant
temperature is from 75 to 90°C (depends to sea water conditions and heat exchanger fouling conditions ) if
the temperature is too high the alarms will warn about the fault. Please reduce the engine speed and if
necessary stop the engine in case of high temperature.
Volt meter: Indicates the battery voltage measure. Normal value is between 12 and 16 volts during engine
operation.
Lights and pilot lamps
Alternator indicator light
If the alternator indicator light turns on when the engine is running:
-
Turn off the engine and check the service belt status.
-
If the belt is in good conditions, the malfunction most likely depends on the alternator or on too low
voltage.
Glow plugs indicator light
Glow plugs indicator light: turns on during engine preheating (before start).
ATTENTION! Glow plugs flashing light indicates malfunction of the engine (applications without general
failure indicator light). Provide with the diagnosis
Oil pressure indicator light
The oil pressure light: Indicates low pressure in the oil circuit. The oil pressure indicator light is connected with the
alarm buzzer.
-
If the oil pressure indicator light turns ON when the engine is running, immediately turn the engine off
because the lubrication system is not working.
-
Check the engine oil level.
-
Wrong sensor reading or wrong connection
ATTENTION! Stop immediately the engine to check for faults if the oil pressure light turns on when the
engine is running.
Coolant indicator light.
The coolant indicator lights ON to indicate engine overheating. You will see the alarm light up when the
temperature of the coolant liquid is too high. At the same time you will also hear the buzzer alarm.
In this case, immediately turn off the engine and check if:
-
The sea water filter is clogged;
-
The sea water valve is open;
-
The coolant liquid is enough.
Besides:
-
Check for leaks in the coolant system;
-
Verify that the impeller for the sea-water pump is in good conditions.
-
Bleed air from coolant circuit .
-
-Wrong sensor reading or wrong connection.
ATTENTION! Stop the engine and check for faults immediately if coolant temp. light is in function.
