SNMP Management Features

SNMP management features on the switch include:
I
SNMP version 2c over IP
Security via configuration of SNMP communities (page 10-3)
I
Event reporting via SNMP
I
Version 1 traps
RMON: groups 1, 2, 3, and 9
Managing the switch with an SNMP network management tool such as HP
I
TopTools for Hubs & Switches
Standard MIBs, such as the Bridge MIB (RFC 1493), Ethernet MAU MIB
I
(RFC 1515), and others.
The switch SNMP agent also uses certain variables that are included in a
Hewlett-Packard proprietary MIB (Management Information Base) file. To
ensure that you have the latest version in the database of your TopTools,
OpenView, or other SNMP network management tool, you can copy the MIB
file from the HP Procurve World Wide Web site at:
http://www.hp.com/go/hpprocurve
Click on software, then MIBs.

Configuring for SNMP Access to the Switch

SNMP access requires an IP address and subnet mask configured on the
switch. (See "IP Configuration" on page 7-3.) If you are using DHCP/Bootp to
configure the switch, ensure that the DHCP/Bootp process provides the IP
address. (See "DHCP/Bootp Operation" on page 7-10.)
Once an IP address has been configured, the main steps for configuring for
SNMP access to management features are:
1.
Configure the appropriate SNMP communities. (Refer to "SNMP Commu-
nities" on page 10-4.)
2.
Configure the appropriate trap receivers. (Refer to "Trap Receivers and
Authentication Traps" on page 10-8.)
In some networks, authorized IP manager addresses are not used. In this case,
all management stations using the correct community name may access the
switch with the View and Access levels that have been set for that community.
If you want to restrict access to one or more specific nodes, you can use the
switch's IP Authorized Manager feature. (Refer to the Access Security Guide
for your switch.)
