INAL
DRIVE
Final
drive,
removing
and installing
The final
drive
unit
is supported at
three
points
on the sus
-
pension
crossmember through rubber
bushings.
New self
-
locking nuts should
always
be used
when
re-attaching
the
driveshaftto
the
final
drive
.
Installation
is the
reverse of removal.
Position
the
final drive
in
place aga
inst
its mounts and loosely install
the
front
mounting
bolt to locate the unit. Then install the left and
right
rear
bolts.
Use new
self-locking
nuts when
reconnecting
the driveshaft
and
align
marks made
during removal. Torque
nuts.
while
hold-
ing
bolts.
Check
final drive
oil
level and
add
or fill
as necessary.

rear of
car
and support it
securely.
Tightening
torques are listed
below
.

Dra
in oil
from
fina l
drive
unit.
as
necessary.

3.
Make
matching
marks on
driveshaft and
final drive in
-
put
flange.
Remove
bolts and
nuts
that
ho
ld
driveshaft
to
final
drive.
Push
driveshaft
forward
slightly
and sus-
pend from
body
with
still
wire
.
CAUTION
-
Do not
let the driveshaft
or
drive
axles hang
utt-
supported.
Damage to the
driveshalt
center
beer-
ing or
drive
axle
outer CV
j
oint could result
.
CAUTlON
-
Do
not
reuse
sell·locking
nuts.
These
nuts
are
de-
signed
to be used only once
and should
be
reo
placed
whenever
they
are
removed.
NOTE
-
When
installing
a
new or BMW remanulactured
linal
drive
unit.
special
breek
-ln procedures
apply.
During
the
lirst

of the bushings before removing

Disconnect drive axles from final drive and
suspend
from body
with
still
wire
.

5.
Place jack
beneath final drive
unit and support weig
ht
of
unit.
6.
Remove
front
final drive mounting bolt.

7.
Disconnect
wires for speedometer pu
lse
sender and
remove
wiring
harness and
connector
from
final drive
housing
.
Low
oil level
caused by a faulty
fina
l drive oil
seal may be
the cause of
noisy
operation
or
limited-slip
ch
atter.
The
drive
flange
(side)
oil
sea
ls
can be replaced
while
the
final
drive
is
installed.
The input shaft (front)
oil
seal
can only be
replaced
once
the
final
drive
unit is removed
.
8. Remove
rear
final
drive
mounting bolts (left
and
right).

NOTE
-
Do not mistake leaking CV
joints lor
/lange
seal
teaks.
It
may be
helplul to
degrease the
/inal
drive to pinpoint
the source

leak
prior
to replacing
seals.
