STARTING THE GASOLINE ENGINE

NOTICE: To sta rt the optional diesel engine, see your "Diesel
Engine Supplement."
Apply the parking brake . (Be sure to release the parking

2a. Automatic Transmission Models:
Place the transmission shift lever in "Park" or Neutral "N"
("Park" preferred). A starter safety device is designed to prevent
starter operation while the shift lever is in any drive position. (If
you need to re-start the engine while the vehicle is moving, place
the shift lever in "N. ")
2b. Manual Transmission Models:
Press the clutch pedal to the floor and shift the
transmission to Neutral. Hold the clutch pedal to the floor
throughout the starting procedure. A starter safety device is
designed to prevent starter operation when the clutch pedal is not
fully depressed. (Select the proper gear position before releasing
the clutch pedal.)

Start the engine as outlined below for different conditions.
NOTICE:
Do not keep the starter engaged for more than 1 5 seconds
at a time. Wait 10 to 1 5 seconds before trying again.
Cold Engine - Press the accelerator pedal to the floor
and slowly release it. With your foot off the pedal crank the
engine by turning the ignition key to "Start." Release key when
engine starts.
If the engine starts, but fails to run, repeat this procedure. When the
engine is running smoothly (about 30 seconds), you can reduce the
engine idle speed by pressing down slightly on the accelerator pedal
and then slowly releasing it.
NOTICE:
Extended running of the engine (5 minutes or more) without
pressing down the accelerator pedal could cause damage to the engine
and exhaust system due to overheating.
Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running. If the
engine should overheat you would not be there to react to the
temperature warning light or gage. This could result in costly damage
to your vehicle and its contents.
