To change the status of a device from online to offline. When a device is offline, no
data set may be opened on that device. (IBM)

VolSafe
VolSafe (volume safe) is a special StorageTek feature that provides write once, read
many (WORM) technology to VolSafe-designated tape cartridges. VolSafe permits
new data to only append the tape media, while it prevents erasure or overwrite of
previously written data.
VOLSER
1. VOLume SERial Number. It is usually six characters long and is both the paper
label stuck on the back edge of the cartridge and in the VOLID label that is recorded,
particularly by MVS systems, at the beginning of the media.
2. An alphanumeric label that the host software uses to identify a volume. It attaches
to the spine of a cartridge and is both human- and machine-readable.

wrap
A single pass of tape from either BOT to EOT or EOT to BOT with the heads in a
fixed transverse location.
write-enabled
A setting on a data cartridge that allows data to be written on the tape.
write operation
An output operation that sends a processed record to an output device or output file.

write-protected
A setting on a data cartridge that prevents data from being written on the tape.
Reading data is still possible.
