5.3 Installing a Switch Module

You can install switch modules in any order and in any combination. Handle the module by its
bulkhead or edges and avoid touching the components and the circuitry on the board. Equalize
any static charge difference between your body and the switch by wearing a grounding wrist
strap and attaching it to the metal body of the switch module, or by frequently touching the
metal body of the switch module.
Caution:
For safety, you must not have more than one module slot uncovered at a time. Unused slots must
have a slot cover plate attached for safe operation and proper switch cooling.
Follow these steps to install a module into the switch:
1. Use a Torx T-10 or flat-bladed screwdriver to unscrew the screws in the cover plate over the
slot you want to use, and remove the cover. Store the cover plate for possible future use.
2. Hold the module by its bulkhead, taking care not to touch the metal connectors or components
on the board.
3. Insert the module into the slot guides and slide it into the slot until it stops. Then press near
the two screws on the module bulkhead to seat the module connector into the switch
backplane. The module bulkhead should be in contact with or very close to contact with the
back face of the switch.
Note:
The modules have low-force connectors. Using high force to insert the modules is
unnecessary. For best results, use low force on both sides of the module to slide it into place.
4. Insert and tighten the two retaining screws to secure the module in place. Do not overtighten
the screws.
Meaning
On indicates the port is enabled and receiving a link beat signal (for the twisted-pair
ports), or a strong enough light level (for the fiber-optic ports) from the connected device.
Off indicates one of these conditions exists:
• No active network cable is connected to the port
• The port is not receiving link beat or sufficient light
• The port has been disabled through the switch console, the web browser interface,
HP ProCurve Manager, or other network management tool.
Flashing indicates the port has failed the self test. The switch Fault, Self Test LEDs, and
appropriate module status LEDs will flash simultaneously. The flashing behavior is an
on/off cycle once every 1.6 seconds, approximately.
Depending on the mode selected, displays network activity information, whether the
port is configured for full duplex operation, maximum speed operation, or whether
network errors are occurring on the port.
