1.4 High-density Configuration Solutions

High-density solutions are designed to minimize floor space and condense as many compute
nodes into a system as possible. In these configurations, 1U, 2U and 4U nodes are allowed to be
mixed with the interconnect equipment in the UBB. This is the primary difference, although
there are also restrictions on the total number of nodes, the available utility nodes, and the volume
of storage equipment supported. The high-density configurations are created from the following
Gigabit Ethernet interconnects:
ProCurve 2824 20-port interconnect
ProCurve 3500yl-24G-PWR 20-port interconnect
ProCurve 2848 40-port interconnect
ProCurve 3500yl-48G-PWR 44-port interconnect
ProCurve 5406zl-48G 144-port interconnect
In each of these configurations, there is significant flexibility in creating each solution. For example,
a single-cabinet solution is created using the 40-port interconnect. This system can accommodate
up to thirty-two (32) 1U compute nodes and a control node, or seventeen (17) 2U compute nodes
and one (1) control node all within the single cabinet. In a two cabinet solution, up to forty (40)
1U compute nodes or thirty-four (34) 2U compute nodes are supported. These two cabinet
solutions are created by adding a Compute Building Block (CBB) to the single cabinet solution.
The control node cannot be connected to the interconnect in all cases; if the control node must
be connected to the interconnect, a maximum of 39 of the available 40 ports are used for compute
nodes.
High Density packaging to accommodate up to 128 nodes may include the following building
blocks:
Utility Building Block (UBB)
