The standard D-113d projector, shown in Figure 2-2, consists of two discrete optical
engines stacked one on top of the other to provide either three-dimensional (3D) or
two-dimensional (2D) content.
For 3D content, each engine produces images for one eye. Two dichroic comb filters –
installed between the lamp and the lens in each engine – parse the visible light spectrum
into 10 narrow, non-overlapping bands. Five of these are directed to the left eye and five
are directed to the right eye. The projector superimposes the output from one engine onto
that from the other engine to produce an extremely bright and focused image.
The left-eye and right-eye images are reflected by the screen back toward the viewing
area and kept isolated by a second set of filters built into the 3D glasses worn by the
viewer. (Each eye sees only those wavelengths sent to it.)
The "left-eye" (top) optical engine receives an HDMI video signal from the Primary DHD
Controller. The "right-eye" (bottom) optical engine receives an HDMI video signal from the
Secondary DHD Controller.
Figure 2-2 shows the key D-113d components.
