SNMP Simple Network Management
Protocol. A scheme whereby network
devices respond with statistics and
other current data when queried.
SP Service Pack.
SPX Sequenced Packet eXchange.
The transport layer protocol used by
Novel Netware.
TCP Transmission Control Protocol.
A transport layer protocol that
provides data delivery with end-to-
end error detection and correction.
TCP handles data in terms of
segments.
TCP/IP Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol. A
standard format for transmitting data
in packets from one computer to
another. The two parts of TCP/IP are
TCP, which deals with construction of
data packets, and IP, which routes
them from computer to computer.
TFTP Trivial File Transfer Protocol.
An elementary file transfer system
that provides no security at all. A
common use for TFTP is downloading
code to network devices as they boot.
In such cases, an administrator
typically configures TFTP for read-
only access to a single directory.
URL Uniform Resource Locator. The
address to a specific resource's
location. If you have a URL, you can
retrieve the resource.
USB Universal Serial Bus.
UPS Uninterruptable Power Supply.
A power supply that uses batteries to
continue providing electricity to a
computer when the mains power fails.
This makes it possible to shut down
the computer in an orderly way
without losing data.
WAN Wide Area Network. A
collection of clients, networks,
servers, and applications that support
graphical hypertext browsing across
the Internet. HTTP is the client-
server network protocol, and HTML is
the hypertext page description
language.
WNM Workgroup Node Manager.
The HP OpenView WNM helps
administrators manage all aspects of
the network, such as hubs, routers,
and servers.
WWW World Wide Web. A network
in which computers may be linked
together by cable, radio and satellite
links. The Internet is a set of
interconnected wide area networks.
