HP's Desktop Management Strategy
HP TopTools is an integrated solution for the management of HP
Vectra PCs, HP Kayak PC Workstations, OmniBook Notebook PCs,
NetServers, as well as standard-based devices from other vendors.
HP TopTools enables efficient and automatic asset and inventory
management, finding and tracking hundreds of PCs over the network.
Important details about a PC's configuration (for example, processor
speeds, hard disk drive(s) and memory, operating system, BIOS and
driver versions) can be collected and used for inventory or planning
purposes.
It should be noted however, that while HP TopTools lets you manage
PCs over a network, it is a device management application, rather than
a network management application.
What's New in TopTools 3.0?
The most important difference between TopTools 3.0 and previous
versions is that the web-based management server gives network
administrators access to hardware resources from virtually anywhere.
With previous versions, TopTools required a separate console, but now
configuration, administration, monitoring, and sophisticated reporting
on a large number of client PCs can be done over the network.
This is now a single HP TopTools for Desktops 3.0 Agent software
package that is compatible with both Windows NT and Windows 95
operating systems. This HP TopTools client software package can be
used with most Hewlett-Packard personal computers.
In addition to the existing automatic asset and inventory management,
with HP TopTools 3.0 you can now obtain driver version information
for hard disk drives (IDE and SCSI), LAN cards and video cards.
